The Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), administered by UNEP, is looking for passionate interns to join their Aquatic Species Team. This is a unique opportunity to work on global treaties that protect sharks, rays, turtles, and marine mammals.
The position is based in Bonn, Germany, but the UN has explicitly stated that Remote Internship options are available upon request. This makes it accessible to students worldwide who cannot relocate. You will be directly involved in implementing decisions from COP15 and preparing for the Sharks MOU meetings.
Duties and Responsibilities
You will work under the supervision of the Programme Officer for the CMS Aquatic Species Team. Your tasks will be substantive and policy-driven:
1. Research & Data Analysis
- Literature Reviews: Conduct deep research on threats affecting marine mammals, sharks, rays, or turtles.
- Data Visualization: Analyze data related to international trade in marine species and fisheries.
- Legal Status: Compile information on national and international legal protections for marine species.
2. Policy & Meeting Support
- Sharks MOU: Assist with preparations for the 5th Meeting of the Sharks MOU Advisory Committee.
- Documentation: Draft background documents for CMS and ASCOBANS meetings.
- Capacity Building: Create videos, presentations, and handouts for workshops.
3. Project Implementation
- Assist with the development of project proposals for fundraising.
- Support the implementation of COP15 decisions.
Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?
The UN has specific academic windows for eligibility. You must meet one of the following:
1. Academic Status
- Final Year: Be currently enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree.
- Graduate Student: Be enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program.
- Recent Graduate: Have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD within one year prior to the start date.
2. Field of Study
- Preferred fields: Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Environmental Studies, International Law, Political Science, or Geography.
3. Skills & Language
- English: Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
- Software: Must be computer literate. Skills in survey design or social media drafting are a plus.
Important: Financials & Visa
This is an UNPAID internship.
- Costs: All costs (travel, accommodation, visas) are the responsibility of the intern.
- Remote Option: Choosing the remote option can significantly reduce these costs.
- Visa: If interning in person in Germany, you must obtain the appropriate visa.
