The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), one of the world's premier non-profit policy research organizations, is seeking an intern to support the Japan Chair for the Spring 2026 term.

Key Responsibilities

The Japan Chair Intern plays a vital role in the program's daily operations and research output. Your responsibilities will include:

1. Research & Analysis

  • Topics: Conduct in-depth research on issues animating Japanese politics, U.S.-Japan relations, and broader U.S. policy in the Indo-Pacific.
  • Sources: Utilize Japanese language original sources to conduct research (a critical skill for this role).

2. Content Creation

  • Draft research memos, presentations, reports, and event summaries for program staff.
  • Assist in preparing materials for high-level policy briefings.

3. Event & Admin Support

  • Provide logistical support for program events (virtual and in-person).
  • Perform general administrative tasks to support office functions.

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

CSIS is looking for candidates with a specific academic focus and language capability.

1. Academic Background

  • Status: Must be at least a College Junior, Graduate Student, or a Recent Graduate.
  • Field: Japan Studies, International Affairs, or Political Science.
  • GPA: Minimum 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

2. Essential Skills

  • Language: Ability to conduct research using Japanese original sources is required.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with Japanese foreign/defense policy and U.S.-Japan relations.
  • Soft Skills: Strong writing, communication, and time management skills.

3. Work Authorization

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

Compensation & Work Mode

  • Pay Rate: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour.
  • Schedule: Full-time or substantial part-time (Spring 2026).
  • Location: Hybrid schedule based in Washington, D.C.
