The Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialized agency of the United Nations, is seeking a Legal Intern to join its Directorate of Legal Affairs (DAJ) in Bern, Switzerland. This is a prestigious opportunity to work at the headquarters of the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players worldwide.

Note on Payment: Unlike many standard UN internships, UPU traineeships are generally remunerated (paid) in accordance with UPU Human Resources rules.


Duties and Responsibilities

Working under the supervision of the Director of the Legal Affairs Department, the intern will engage in high-level legal research and analysis. Key responsibilities include:

1. Research & Analysis

  • Carry out research on Public International Law and Administrative Law (specifically the UN common system).
  • Prepare draft documents on legal issues related to the structure and functions of the UPU.

2. Legal Instruments

  • Assist in the preliminary analysis of treaties, agreements, regulations, and resolutions.
  • Draft legal instruments such as contracts, internal rules, and legislative texts.

3. Advisory Support

  • Assist the Director in preparing background papers and reports.
  • Synthesize views and practices on complex legal issues relevant to the organization.

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

The UPU has strict criteria regarding student status and language proficiency.

1. Academic Status (Strict)

  • Current Students: You must be a law student currently enrolled in a university.
  • Recent Graduates: You are eligible ONLY if you graduated within six months of the date of this announcement (December 17, 2025).
  • Minimum Age: Must be at least 20 years old.

2. Legal Knowledge

  • Good knowledge of Public International Law, the Law of International Organizations, and/or Arbitration Law.

3. Language Skills (Bilingual Requirement)

  • Primary Language: Excellent command (UN Level III) of English OR French.
  • Secondary Language: Good command (UN Level II) of the other language. (e.g., If your English is excellent, your French must be good, and vice versa).
