The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is looking for a talented Statistics Intern to join its Global Data Service (GDS) in Copenhagen, Denmark. This is a world-class opportunity to work with the Statistics, Data Science, and Survey Section (SDSS).
UNHCR aims to be a trusted leader on data related to forcibly displaced populations. As an intern, you will contribute to high-level reports like the Global Trends Report and the Refugee Data Finder. You will use statistical modeling to fill data gaps that directly impact the lives of millions of refugees and stateless people.
Duties and Responsibilities
Working under the direct supervision of the Statistics and Data Analysis Officer, your work will focus heavily on Demographics and Partnerships. Key duties include:
1. Data Analysis & Modeling
- Quality Assessment: Assess the quality of demographic data on forcibly displaced populations.
- Modeling: Apply statistical and econometric modeling (e.g., Bayesian hierarchical models) to fill data gaps.
2. Partnerships (IDAC)
- Support UNHCR’s engagement with the International Data Alliance for Children on the Move (IDAC).
- Contribute to analytical products regarding children on the move (e.g., specific case studies on children in Indonesia).
3. Capacity Building & Research
- Support research plans to improve data collection on displaced children.
- Assist in preparing workshops, meetings, and materials for global stakeholders.
Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?
UNHCR has specific academic requirements for interns.
1. Academic Status
- Recent Graduate: Completed studies within the last two years.
- Current Student: Currently enrolled in a graduate/undergraduate program and have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies.
- Field of Study: Statistics, Economics, Demography, Sociology, or Social Sciences with strong quantitative skills.
2. Desirable Skills
- Experience in Statistical/Econometric Modeling.
- Ability to write high-quality research papers and policy reports in English.
- Knowledge of official statistics related to forced displacement is a major asset.
