The Department of Global Communications (DGC) at the United Nations is seeking a talented intern for its Education Outreach Section. This internship supports the Human Rights portfolio, a key pillar of the UN's mission.

Specifically, you will work on two major initiatives:

  • The Outreach Programme on the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda: Focused on remembrance and education to prevent future genocides.
  • United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI): An initiative that aligns institutions of higher education with the UN regarding human rights, sustainability, and global citizenship.

Work Mode Flexibility: While the internship is designed to be In-Person at the UN Headquarters in New York, the team is open to Hybrid or Remote settings based on the candidate's request.


Key Responsibilities

This is a content-heavy role ideal for students with strong writing and multimedia skills. You will assist in:

1. Content Creation (Web & Social)

  • Drafting: Assist in producing, formatting, and editing original content for the website, including news stories.
  • Social Media: Draft engaging social media content for official accounts related to the Genocide Outreach Programme and UNAI.
  • Multimedia: Assist in editing photos, graphics, and videos.

2. Event Planning

  • Logistics: Help plan lectures and events by researching speakers and preparing invitations.
  • Materials: Create promotional materials for events.

3. Research & Admin

  • Conduct internet research on thematic issues like Human Rights, Global Citizenship Education, and the SDGs.
  • Maintain databases for UNAI and the Outreach Programme.

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

The UN has specific academic requirements. You must meet one of the following:

1. Academic Status

  • Graduate Student: Be enrolled in (or have completed) a Master’s or PhD programme.
  • Undergraduate Student: Be enrolled in (or have completed) the final academic year of a Bachelor’s degree programme.

2. Field of Study

  • Preferred fields: Journalism, Communication, Media Studies, Filmmaking, International Relations, or related fields.

3. Skills

  • Writing: Excellent writing skills are required (an assessment may be conducted).
  • Multimedia: Skills in social media and multimedia production are strongly desired.
  • Software: Proficiency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Teams).

Important: Financials & Visa

This is an UNPAID internship.

  • Costs: All costs (travel, accommodation, living expenses) are the responsibility of the intern.
  • Visa (In-Person): Non-US citizens interning in New York must obtain a G-4 Visa.
  • Remote Option: If you cannot relocate or obtain a visa, you may request a remote arrangement.
