UTMB Summer Institute 2026: Fully Funded Biostatistics Program (Stipend + Travel)

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is inviting applications for its Summer Institute in Biostatistics and Data Science (SIBS). This is an intensive seven-week program based in Galveston, Texas, designed to expose undergraduate students to the booming fields of biostatistics and data science.

There are 20 positions available for the 2026 cohort. This is a comprehensive, fully funded opportunity where selected students earn college credit, receive a living stipend (covering lodging and meals), and have their travel costs covered. The deadline to apply is April 15, 2026.

Program Scope: What Will You Do?

This program is designed to bridge the gap between quantitative skills and medical research. Your seven weeks will be packed with learning and application:

• Academic Credit: You will complete a course in biostatistics and earn official college credit.
• Technical Training: You will learn essential statistical software packages used in the industry.
• Research Project: You will participate in a collaborative research project mentored by faculty in basic science, clinical research, and biostatistics.
• Symposium: At the end of the program, you will prepare and deliver a polished poster presentation reporting on your research findings.

Eligibility and Mandatory Requirements

UTMB is looking for quantitative-minded students interested in health sciences. To qualify, you must meet the following criteria:

Mandatory Qualifications

• Education: You must be an Undergraduate Student.
• Major: Majors in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Biology, or other Health Sciences are preferred.
• Citizenship: You must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Benefits and Financial Support

This is one of the most financially supportive summer programs available for undergraduates: Full Support: The program provides a living stipend that includes lodging and meals. Travel: Travel expenses to and from Galveston are provided. Education: Tuition for the biostatistics course (college credit) is covered.
